Ethers are a class of organic compounds characterized by an oxygen atom bonded to two alkyl or aryl groups (R–O–R’). They are important in organic chemistry due to their unique properties and applications in pharmaceuticals, solvents, and industry.
Types of Ethers
The classification of ethers is mainly based on the nature of groups attached to the oxygen atom.
1. Simple (Symmetrical) Ethers
When both groups attached to the oxygen atom are identical, the ether is called a simple ether. Example: Diethyl ether (C2H5–O–C2H5).
2. Mixed (Unsymmetrical) Ethers
When the two groups attached to the oxygen atom are different, the ether is called a mixed ether. Example: Methyl ethyl ether (CH3–O–C2H5).
Examples
- Simple ether: Diethyl ether – used as an anesthetic.
- Mixed ether: Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) – used as a fuel additive.
Properties of Ethers
- Relatively non-polar compared to alcohols.
- Lower boiling points than alcohols of similar molecular mass.
- Good solvents for organic reactions.

True/False Quiz
- 1. All ethers are symmetrical.
❌ False Explanation: Ethers can be symmetrical (simple) or unsymmetrical (mixed). - 2. Diethyl ether is an example of a simple ether.
✅ True - 3. Ethers have higher boiling points than alcohols of the same mass.
❌ False Explanation: Alcohols have higher boiling points due to hydrogen bonding. - 4. Methyl tert-butyl ether is a mixed ether.
✅ True - 5. Ethers are polar compounds with strong hydrogen bonding.
