1️⃣ Magnetic Field & Lorentz Force
Force on a moving charge in magnetic field:
F = q (v × B)
- q = charge
- v = velocity
- B = magnetic field
Direction given by Right-Hand Rule.
2️⃣ Biot–Savart Law
Magnetic field due to small current element:
dB = (μ₀ / 4π) (I dl sinθ / r²)
For long straight wire:
B = μ₀I / 2πr
3️⃣ Ampere’s Circuital Law
∮ B · dl = μ₀ I
Used for symmetric cases like:
- Infinite wire
- Solenoid
- Toroid
4️⃣ Force on Current Carrying Conductor
F = BIL sinθ
For two parallel wires:
F/L = μ₀ I₁ I₂ / 2πr
If currents are in same direction → Attraction Opposite direction → Repulsion
5️⃣ Motion of Charged Particle in Magnetic Field
When velocity ⟂ B:
Radius: r = mv / qB Time Period: T = 2πm / qB
This is uniform circular motion.
6️⃣ Cyclotron
Used to accelerate charged particles.
Cyclotron Frequency:
f = qB / 2πm
Very important derivation for JEE.
7️⃣ Solved Numerical
Q: A proton enters 0.5T magnetic field with velocity 2×10⁶ m/s perpendicular to field. Find radius.
r = mv/qB = (1.67×10⁻²⁷ × 2×10⁶) / (1.6×10⁻¹⁹ × 0.5) ≈ 0.0417 m
8️⃣ MCQs (Exam 2026)
1. Unit of magnetic field:
A) Newton
B) Tesla ✔
C) Volt
D) Coulomb
2. Two parallel currents in same direction:
A) Repel
B) Attract ✔
