1️⃣ What is Wave Motion?

Wave motion is the transfer of energy from one point to another without actual transfer of matter.

Example: Water waves, Sound waves, Light waves.

2️⃣ Types of Waves

1. Transverse Waves

Particle vibration is perpendicular to direction of wave propagation.

2. Longitudinal Waves

Particle vibration is parallel to direction of wave propagation.

3️⃣ Wave Parameters

  • Amplitude (A): Maximum displacement
  • Wavelength (λ): Distance between two successive crests
  • Frequency (f): Number of oscillations per second
  • Time Period (T): Time for one oscillation

Relation:

v = fλ

4️⃣ Wave Equation

y = A sin (ωt − kx)

  • ω = 2πf (Angular frequency)
  • k = 2π/λ (Wave number)

Very important for JEE derivations.

5️⃣ Speed of Wave

For string:

v = √(T/μ)

  • T = tension
  • μ = mass per unit length

6️⃣ Phase & Phase Difference

Phase determines the position of particle in oscillation.

Phase difference:

Δφ = 2π (Δx / λ)

7️⃣ Solved Numerical

Q: A wave has frequency 500 Hz and wavelength 0.6 m. Find speed.

v = fλ = 500 × 0.6 = 300 m/s

8️⃣ MCQs (Boards + JEE + NEET 2026)

1. In transverse wave, particle vibration is:
A) Parallel
B) Perpendicular ✔
C) Circular
D) Random

2. Wave speed formula:
A) v = fλ ✔
B) v = f/λ
C) v = λ/f
D) v = λ²
